DISTRIBUTION BOARDS

The continuity and even distribution of electricity are critical to your generator hire application. Distribution boards are responsible for properly regulated energy distribution and safety; in the U.S. it is said that distribution boards “are the glue that holds the United States’ electrical system together.”

Efficiency and Safety

Distribution boards are sometimes known as breaker panels, consumer unit, electrical panels or panelboards. A distribution board is one part of an electrical system that supplies power into subsidiary circuits. A protective fuse or circuit breaker is also provided in the distribution board’s casing. One or more RCDs (residual-current devices) or RCBOs (residual current breakers with over-current protection) are usually included.

Rental Power 32A and 63A (3PH) distribution boards are RCD (residual current device) and MCB (miniature circuit breaker)-protected for technician safety. They are available for short-term and long-term hire, and options include extension leads to make the connection between the generator and distribution board easy and fast.

32A 3PH features include:

  • 1 x 32A 5-pin switched outlet
  • 1 x 32A main isolator
  • 32A extension leads
  • 6 x 15A auto-switched outlets

Includes stand

63A 3PH unit weight is 21 k. Features include:

  • 1 x 20A 3-phase, 5-pin outlet, RCD and MCB protected
  • 1 x 50A 3-phase, 5-pin outlet, RCD and MCB protected
  • 1 x 63A 3-phase 5-pin outlet, RCD and MCB protected
  • 1 x 63A 3-phase, 5-pin inlet socket
  • 10 x 15A 240V outlets individual RCBO protection
  • 2 x 32A 3-phase, 5-pin outlets, RCD and MCB protected
  • 63A extension leads
  • IP 66
  • Short- to long-term generator hire options available at discounted rate

Breakers

Breakers are usually two columns, and each row is fed from a different phase to allow 2- or 3-pole common-trip breakers to have one pole per phase.

Fuse Boxes

In a typical UK distribution board, three incoming phase wires connect to the busbar (a metallic strip/bar for high-current power distribution) in the centre. For every phase, power is fed through a busbar and on each side there are two more busbars for “neutral” incoming and “earth” incoming. In split-phase operations, busbars are fed directly from the incoming wire.

Electrical Management with Distribution Boards

One of the advantages of using a distribution board in commercial and industrial settings is the design allows for “selective tripping.” This is especially important in a manufacturing or data processing center because a problem circuit will be isolated and shut down without impacting the entire system.

If there is an overload or short circuit, employee safety should never be compromised. The boards and circuit breakers can even protect operators from arcing faults and many are constructed to withstand an explosion.

Distribution boards and its components have a pivotal role in maintaining consistency of operations. They have an added, important part of personnel safety and protecting worksites from fire.

Regular maintenance lowers your risk of emergency breakdowns, even for standby generators. Some of the reasons for generator failure include:

  • Fuel filter clogged due to old or contaminated fuel
  • START switch left in the OFF position rather than AUTO
  • Starting batteries dead or insufficiently charged

Because of the durability of our generators, most maintenance is preventive. Maintenance service includes:

  • Cooling system service
  • Fuel system service
  • General inspection
  • Lubrication service
  • Regular engine exercise
  • Servicing and testing starting batteries

It is generally a good idea to maintain a regular schedule of maintenance service based on your specific power applications and the nature of the environment in which your equipment is used. For extremely harsh operating situations, recommended maintenance schedules should be increased.
